HEALTHY JUICES
Certain juices do, in fact, help each
of us as regards to our odds of beating high blood pressure, cancer, heart
disease, and improving our overall immune system. These juice are those
that contain high levels of phytochemicals that act as antioxidants which in
turn protect our cells from certain forms of cancer and heart disease. When used
as part of a diet that includes whole fresh vegetables, whole fruits, whole
grains, and lean protein these juices really pump up the antioxidant
compounds needed by the body.
These fruit juices are -
[1] UNCLARIFIED APPLE JUICE does not look as appealing as the clear but it has up to
four times the amount of the antioxidant polyphenols as the clear.
[2] ORANGE JUICE is another class of phytochemicals that help lower blood
pressure, improve our immune system, fight cancer, and reduce the
reoccurrence of kidney stones.
[3] POMEGRANATE JUICE is the newest hero on the
juice list because of its ability to prevent heart disease and benefit those
who already face coronary artery disease.
[4] PRUNE JUICE, according to the
UCLA school of medicine and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is the richest
source of antioxidants of any fruit or vegetable juice.
IMPORTANT - up to 20% of the
total calorie intake of many Americans come from the fluids we drink. Thus, we
need to be careful of the calorie content of any liquid. When you buy
fruit juices look carefully at the actual percentage of juice you are
getting. Some juices are filled with sugar water, food coloring, and as little
as 15% or less pure juice. Look for 100% pure apple, orange, pomegranate, or
prune juice.
EQUALLY IMPORTANT is that even 100%
pure juice does not contain the fiber that your body needs for good health
thus you also need to eat whole fruits. If you mix fruit juices with whole
fruit in the blender you also help to get the necessary fiber. Pomegranate
juice is the exception since it is made from crushing the entire fruit.
JUST AS IMPORTANT is that your diet
should not have more than two 6 oz. servings of fruit juice a day. What you
need to do is drink two different fruit juices every day. A 6 ounce serving
of orange juice contains 90 calories and an equal amount of prune juice
contains 135 calories. Yes, you should be counting your calories if you are
interested in good health and maintaining a healthy weight.
FINALLY, fruit juices are indeed
fantastic but they are only part of the total game plan that should be
incorporated into your goal of achieving a healthy life style
