HAUPPAUGE TAKES TITLE
EASTERN STATES IS REALLY A CLASSIC
Hauppauge wins the team title, it's 162.5 points good for a 25.5 point margin
over runner-up Suffolk County neighbor Rocky Point.
It isn’t the state wrestling tournament, but it’s close.
The two-day Eastern States Classic, which took place at Sullivan
County Community College in Loch Sheldrake this year, has taken a deserved place as the
top in-section tournament in New York State.
Drawing athletes from 74 teams, this year’s field boasted 9 of the 14
returning New York state champions, and 6 of the 12 underclassmen who
finished second last winter at the Times Union Center.
In all, 20 of the 44 placing underclassmen from the state DI tourney —
and 16 of the 36 from the DII tourney — are the seeded in the ESC.
Factoring in wrestlers from Danbury, Conn., Timberlane (N.H.) and the three
Massachusetts teams in the field, there is at least one reigning state
champion in 14 of the 15 weight classes — the exception being 96 pounds.
There were three state champs at 112, where the top man is 2x
state-placer Sean McCormick of Johnson City.
Three state champs were seeded at both 130 and 140, with large-school winner
Stephen Dutton of Rocky Point and D2 champ Derak Heyman of Tioga 1-2 in the
latter weight class.
