JOHN GLENN PRAISED AS BEST TEAM IN THE STATE

LEWISBORO LEDGER NEWS

The John Jay wrestling team knew that the Union Endicott Duals would be the
toughest dual meet tournament the program has ever experienced — and the event, unfortunately, live up to expectations.

Going against the best teams in the state, in what is the unofficial dual meet state championships, the Indians won one of only four matches at the tourney, held on Saturday and Sunday in Endicott.

“A great, very humbling experience for all involved. We knew it was going to be an amazing group of teams from around the state and we were not disappointed,” said head coach Bill Swertfager. “It exposed some weaknesses that we are going to correct and hopefully will make us stronger for our own post-season run.”

The Indians came back on Tuesday to trounce Horace Greeley at home, 77-9, to improve their record to 16-10.

Just being at the U.E. Duals was a historic accomplishment for John Jay, which was the first team from Section 1 to ever be invited to the event.

The Indians opened against John Glenn High School from Long Island and suffered a lopsided 53-4 defeat. John Jay’s only win came from Billy Watterson at 119 pounds with a major decision. Watterson was the only John Jay wrestler to finish the tourney unbeaten at 4-0.

John Glenn went on to win the tournament in convincing fashion, winning in the final easily over the three-time defending champ, Spencerport.

“John Glenn is the best high school wrestling team I have ever seen, let alone had to compete against,” commented Swertfager. “We won one match against Glenn and had a couple of close losses, but otherwise we were schooled. I think we wrestled a little tentatively, which didn’t help the matter.”

John Glenn ended the weekend as the undisputed number-one team in the state.
