JANUARY - A CRITICAL TIME ON THE MAT
Wrestlers across the state
are beginning to get prepared because the time is
now.
Now is the time to tweak moves to fit styles. Now is the time to get on a
roll. Now is the time to make a mark. Now is the time to get ready because
February is the biggest month in high school wrestling.
I love to watch wrestling in January because it is so different from
February, when it is all about the best of the best. In January, however, it is
about battling to be the best. I compare January wrestling to September of the
baseball season. Every wrestler has a chance to make a mark. The junior varsity
wrestlers have an opportunity to make varsity. The varsity wrestlers can perfect
their craft.
Right now, nobody is guaranteed a spot in the state tournament, the sectional
tournament or even the league tournament because anyone can burst through and
become a star.
Some of the sport's new names have a chance to go far.
